Ten on Tuesday

Yes, its Thursday again. But hey, its the next week and not the next month.

1) We're landscaping our garden ourselves and its a work in progress. Things grow very well here in FL...like the weeds.

2) As I was removing some grass this morning underneath our dogwood, I saw a little snake slithering away. He was little and not poisonous, but I was happy not to run into him again.

3) Ollie actually swam a few strokes of free-style at swim lessons the other day. It was exciting for me.

4) Charlotte LOVES the water. A lot.

5) Risby is finally regaining her girlish figure. Poor pup has been on weight loss food, and its nice to see some results.

6) Tim and I are doing an Olympic Tri this weekend.

7) We are VERY excited to see our good friends Bill and Erin. The four of us were like peas and carrots back in Boston.

8) Can't wait to meet Liam and Maddie (their kids).

9) We'll be sort of near Cape Canaveral, so I hope to see some little bit of the shuttle launch. Maybe.

10) LOVE my kiddos these days. They're both very cute. Not so cute when they flip out over tiny things, but overall...very cute.

Ten on Tuesday

Or...Thursday. My friend Susie does this and I love the idea. A quick update of our life every week. I know the family will love it : )

1. The kids are taking swimming lessons every week and they love it. Charlotte was actually bobbing at the wall and Ollie will dive under and get rings.

2. We joined the local pool as a way to beat the heat this summer, and to take advantage of the swimming lessons.

3. Life is settling in for us and our weekly routine is nice. Its gonna change in another couple of weeks as summer hits, but we all love this part of the world.

4. Ollie would like our next house to have stairs. Our current house has none.

5. Ollie is settling in well also. He's begun to make friends and talk about CA a little less. Good thing that Carter is nearby : )

6. Charlotte is talking up a blue streak. I sometimes understand what she says and other times, I have to smile and nod.

7. I have a hard time believing that my sweet girl will be two in a couple of months. She'll be ready for a big girl bed soon.

8. Ollie has become a great big brother. He likes to wake Charlotte up with her morning vitamin and he offered to sing her a song when she had shots the other day.

9. Charlotte misses O when he's at school. She stands at the window and waves when he gets a ride and she cries when we drop him off. Its very sweet.

10. You wouldn't know that they loved each other so much at times. Can I super glue a halo to their heads?

How Wonderful Life Is

We went to Home Depot today and it was very exciting. I get it now, why people who only live somewhere for a few years but still spend money on a house. Its not just a house, its our home. And I love it. Tim primed the pillars on our front porch and I painted our entryway. Its going to be beautiful when we're done.

Back at HD, I walked through the flower section and left feeling like I'd walked through a botanic garden. I was all warm and fuzzy inside, thinking about my own garden. Our back yard is full of possibilities (which is code for - it needs a LOT of work). We're going to be able to make a nice flower garden, veg garden, and still have space for the kids to play. AND we have a large cement slab, complete with a basketball hoop. When O and C grow a few more feet, we'll be all set.

The weather here has been unbelievable. Saturday morning, Tim and I dropped the kids off at my gym and I was able to go for a bike ride with my love. It wasn't long, but it was nice to ride with him : )

In other news, lots of things are going on in our community. Our lifestyle lets us get to know people and then moves us away. Its both a blessing and a curse. Every time I move, I have insecure moments where I second guess everything I say. This move has been easier as some of my very good friends moved here as well. Good friends know me well enough to forgive those moments when I stick my foot in my mouth. New friends, maybe not so much. So, I usually agonize over something that I said and then try to act cool and nonchalant as I relate my foot in the mouth moment to said new friend in hopes that she calms my fears. This, my friends, after unpacking, is the worst part of moving. The best part of moving is the chance to get to know some amazing people. We've been very fortunate so far to meet some of the best people that the AF has to offer, in my humble opinion.

The other nasty part of moving is leaving old friends and missing out on the big stuff. Our friend had a kidney transplant on Tuesday. Thank the Lord, she is doing well. Two of our friends had healthy baby girls, which is amazing. I've been on FB all day, hoping for good news about our other friend, who is in the ICU. He went from a healthy guy to very sick, very quickly. The latest news is better, but he's still not up and at 'em.

I'm the kind of girl who wears my heart on my sleeve. I always have. What this means is that I have a hard time not thinking about my friend and her sick husband. How can I enjoy a bike ride, when she's at the hospital with her husband? We're doing what we can, which is saying prayers and sending messages. There's not much else to do at this point. I'm just reminded to hold my kids a little tighter and tell my hub how much I love him. Again.

Life is wonderful, because of the wonderful people we share it with. Chances are, if you're reading this blog...you're one of the wonderful people in my life. Thanks.

Happy Friday

Life here in Florida is good. Very good, in fact. Today, the kids and I went to see a production of "Madeline and the Bad Hat" at the local theater. It was based on the kids series and it was just perfect. Every time that we clapped, Ollie looked at me and excitedly whispered, "Mommy, is there still more show?" He loved it. Charlotte loved it too, but an hour was just a little too long for my girl. She did clap and say, "Yay!" at the appropriate times. Tomorrow, we're off to a farmer's market. I am SO excited.

Ollie continues to do well. He's in a preschool program and he seems to enjoy it. I think he's learning a little bit too. He's on the cusp of reading, but I don't want to push him too far. He and I can butt heads from time to time, so I try to pick my battles. Gentle encouragement is the best approach, I think. We've been to story time at the library and he LOVES it. Its going to become a regular event on our calendar. I'm so excited to be in such a great community with so many things to take advantage of. Our town is very family friendly.

O man is still a riot. He's happy to kiss C, but his hugger is currently broken.

Me: Ollie, we'll have to take you in to have that fixed.
O: No Mommy, eating chicken with crumbles is how we fix that
Me: Didn't you have that for dinner tonight?
O: Yes, but the chicken went to the side hugger (pointing to his left leg). It has to go to the middle hugger (pointing to his middle). The switcher is broken. I need rice milk to fix the switcher.

Man, I love this kid. He and C really enjoy each other and they'll do cute things for each other, like bring the other one milk. Makes me melt a little bit inside.

I also love that O can reason now. I can talk to him reasonably and he can make decisions based on information instead of me laying down the law. Don't fret...I let him know who is boss. I don't tolerate whining, and you don't get things unless you ask nicely. But its so great to be able to tell him to play a little more gently with his sister and have him listen. Makes me think that *sometimes* I'm not so bad at this parenting thing. Sometimes.

Charlotte is still my little angel. Okay, when she had big issues falling asleep, she's wasn't so angelic. After a week and a half of really bad sleep, my friend Lauren gave me some great advice and it worked. I went in every ten to fifteen minutes and gave her a kiss, told her I loved her, and left. No holding, no coddling. It took 40 minutes last night, and 5 tonight. Its not that I don't love her, I just need some me time and I get it once the kids are asleep. I don't think I'm unreasonable.

C has also begun to potty train herself. Unless she has pants on, she pulls her diaper off and will run around naked. We have the training potty in the kids bathroom, but O doesn't really use it anymore. I asked him not to use it as I cleaned it out this morning, and he said that he hadn't. C was naked at the time, so I think it might have been her. She's also taken great delight in sitting on the potty and reading potty books. Who am I to stop the flow of progress?

Hope you are all well. We're eagerly anticipating the return of my other half. Its been a couple of weeks and we have a couple more to go. Things are good (as long as we have sleep) and we have a lot of support. I still miss him, though. I can get into a routine while he is away, but I never get used to life without him. Can't wait to enjoy our new home when he gets back : )

Long time, no blog

We're here in Florida! I'm waiting on hold, so what better time to update the blog? Things are as busy as ever, but life on the coast is great so far.

Ollie has begun preschool here and he loves it so far. I've signed him up for gymnastics and swimming. We're all going to benefit from the activity, I think. He loves to ask questions, tell stories, and listen to stories. O man is into "How to Train Your Dragon" and playing with anything that's in front of him. He seems to be settling into life here just fine, which is a relief. Ollie will talk your ear off, if you'll listen. Like father, like son...I love it.

Charlotte is as fabulous as ever...as long as she's not hungry. She's not in love with car rides, but she loves her brother and her folks. C also loves books and her minnie mouse. She loves to make animal noises, and she talks almost as much as her brother ; )

We bought a Wii instead of cable, with the goal of watching less TV. I turn on kids music on Pandora while I'm working around the house, and that's going well so far.

Tim has ventured to the other corner of the country and is qualifying in the C model. Bummed not to have a reason to visit Goldsboro, but I'll get back there one day.

I'm super busy getting the house in order and settling in. The previous owners painted the ceilings, which made for a dark house. We were very fortunate to have Tim's folks and my cousin and her fiance out to help us paint and fix up the house. My parents (and my sister) helped out by keeping the kids in the 'Ham while we worked. We managed to accomplish a lot, but there's still more to do. The house is great, but it needs some TLC.

Spot On

I love how FB helps keep me apprised of certain things that I might not otherwise be aware of. A friend posted this link and it brought tears to my eyes. Mrs. Obama has taken the cause of military spouses and the particular challenges that we face as we support our man (or woman, for some) in uniform. She manages to acutely capture the issues and then challenges us to help where we can. Its a long video (25 minutes), but its very worth it, especially if you'd like to know more about life as a military spouse. Let me also take a moment to express my gratitude for all of those women (and men) who keep things going while their spouse is away for a year or more. While Tim may still have a year-long deployment in the future, we are so very thankful that his commitments have been less than that so far.

Eglin, AFB

The next stop on this great AF adventure will take us to Eglin AFB on the panhandle of FL. We're really excited for all of the opportunities that wait for us there. Coming from the UK, So Cal seemed very close to family, but its actually a long trek back east. We are excited to be within driving distance from both grandparents. OK...Ft. Worth would still be a hike, but its a 12 hour hike instead of a 30 hour hike!

We'll be...
1 hour from Pensacola
2 hours from Mobile
3 hours from Montgomery
4 and a half hours from Birmingham
4 and a half hours from New Orleans
5 and a half hours from Baton Rouge
6 and a half hours from Disneyworld
7 hours from St. Petersburg, FL

We will also be around the best schools in the state of Florida, plenty of preschool options, and the beach!

Summer Catch Up

We've had a great summer this year, with our great Montana Road Trip and a Colorado Road Trip. Our good friends April and Aaron arrived from our old squadron and we really enjoyed spending some time with them. They did us the great favor of watching Risby while we went up to Montana. We are really excited to hang out with them on a regular basis these days.

I was just a little bit eager to hit the road and enjoy a break from the brown, flat Mojave, so Tim arrived home to a packed car and we began our journey North! We drove about 5 and a half hours to St. George, UT the first evening. It was nice to wake up outside of Zion National
Park. The scenery really begins to change once you hit Utah, and it was a welcome sight for our eyes.

Charlotte atop Teton Village, trying to hold as many rocks as possible. Reminds me of someone else I know...

Ollie after the Gondola ride...not smiling for the camera

We managed to keep the car somewhat organized, but there wasn't much room to see out of the back!

We drove from St. George to Ogden, UT, with a stop in Salt Lake City to check out Temple Square. It was a very interesting experience to see so many women wearing long skirts, sweaters in the warm weather, and walking in pairs. I didn't think that I stood out as a non-Mormon, but after speaking to some friends who have lived in the area, apparently we did. Oh well, they were nice enough to let us visit the pretty grounds.

The landscape was gorgeous after Ogden, as we made our way into Teton Village at the base of the Teton Mountains. They had a Father's Day special and only I had to pay for the gondola ride to the top of Apres Vous Mtn.
There's something great about having two kids and traveling with them. We're very blessed!

The pictures aren't loading very well...sorry about that!

The drive between Teton Village and Cody, WY was the most amazing as you might imagine. We drove through Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park. We saw buffalo, moose, and deer. No bears (except the stuffed kind). We stayed at a Dude Ranch outside of Cody, which had some really good steaks and a bar for Tim and I to visit after the kids were in bed!

From Cody, we drove to Glendive, MT and met up with Tim's folks.

That's enough for one post...I'll catch you up on the rest very soon!

Updates

Things are quick and crazy around here, but very good. Tim is busy with work...he's about to enjoy some time on a very big boat. We'll all be grateful for the AF life after this weekend, I think.

O man is doing very well. He's begun a new year at Mrs. Tara's preschool. Its within walking distance of the house and he loves it! Ollie in school is good for everyone involved : ) O man is obsessed with dinosaurs (especially the T-Rex) and other bigger kid things. He informed me the other day that he was a T-rex robot. The crazy things kids come up with! I would like to take the credit for his smart comments, but I'm pretty sure that he knows the word Jurassic because of Dinosaur Train. Thanks, PBS Kids! I guess all of the travel this summer to dinosaur locations in Utah didn't hurt.

Charlotte is a barrel of fun too. Her favorite word is "shoe," and I have woken up to a Teva in my face, ready to don my foot, on more than one morning. She will also try to bring over any pair of shoes to you and insist that you put them on. She's still a sweet girl, but she is very certain about what she likes and doesn't like and she is NOT afraid to tell you her opinion. I don't know where she gets that from. She loves her board books, especially the classic Pat the Bunny and anything Ollie can do, she can do better.

I'm doing pretty well too. A little burnt out on the whole race thing, but I still have four more to go! I'll make it through and I will be very happy when they are all behind me : ) Life in the desert is good and I'm trying to soak up as much time with my friends as possible. No matter where we are stationed next year, I will certainly be apart from some of them and I will be very sad about that. Its been amazing to get to know so many great gals. What will the world be like when I don't have great friends up and down my street?

Next on the horizon is a half marathon thru Disneyland for me and a camping trip to Yosemite for Tim and the kids. We're taking the kids to Disney later in the month for a conference, so we didn't feel the need to take them over Labor Day weekend. And the weekend after that is a triathlon in Malibu. I won't feel so lame looking for famous people as I slog away on the bike and the run. I'll be too busy looking out for sharks during the swim! We hope to find out our next fabulous assignment in October. We'll either stay here at lovely Edwards or make our way to the panhandle of Florida. We'll keep you posted!

Hope you are all well : )
Love,
The Spauldings

Shout Out

Congrats to my fabulous husband...he will be awarded the Lt. Col. Anthony C. Shine Award tomorrow. Captain Shine flew near the border of Laos and North Vietnam on December 2, 1972, when he failed to answer his wing man's radio call. Seven years later he was declared dead, and 24 years after that he was finally laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery. Tim and I will have the distinct honor of meeting his daughter, Colleen Shine, tomorrow when she presents the award to Tim. I am also fortunate to be able to spend the morning with her and I am humbled to share her company. If you'd like to read more about her, here is a link.

I would use a third hand if I had one

Happy birthday to Charlotte. Her actual birthday isn't for another week, but we celebrated this afternoon with a combined party for her and her friends Philippine and Parker.

It is hard to believe that it was only a year ago that Charlotte was on the breathing machines in the NICU at Addenbrooke's. We're so thankful for all of the dedicated and caring people who helped her through that time, and for the military, which unhesitatingly gave me time away from work and unflinchingly paid the bills for all of Charlotte's care. Not everyone is so fortunate.

Not everyone is so fortunate to have to the family support that we did, either. Especially Martha, who dropped her summer plans and immediately arrived at our doorstep -- 3000 miles away-- to make sure we were ok. Thank you Mom.

At the Addenbrooke's, parents often send a thank you note and a one-year photo of their kids who started off in the NICU. I think this'll be an appropriate shot!

Long weekend

O and C enjoyed the trip as well. Charlotte still tries to eat sand once in awhile, but it is at least less often than before! Ollie had a great time chasing the waves and enjoy the 'salty water.'

We also got to celebrate our 7th (!) anniversary with a nice dinner and bottle of wine. What a great weekend!

11 Months and Counting

Family pictures at the Getty Museum in LA

Long time, no update! Sort of a theme I have here...busy, busy! Life is good here at the Spaulding Home. Tim loves his job and has flown some really cool aircraft. I'm busy with the kiddos, the other ladies, and my triathlons. Most of you want to know about the kiddos, so here's an update:

Ollie is as smart as a whip these days. He's learning about numbers and letters...all the fun stuff. We're trying to figure out what to do next year for school for him. There isn't one perfect option out there. There are two good options in Lancaster (30+ minutes away). One is a private school (pricey!!) and the other is a Montessori school (also not so cheap). He would get the challenges that he needs, but its a long haul for all three of us to make everyday. There is a lady here on base that everyone raves about, but I'm not sure if he's going to be challenged much there. Odds are that we'll stay on base, at least until we find out if we stay or if we go.

Charlotte is as cute as ever. She turned 11 months the other day. Its so hard to believe that she's almost a year old!! She loves to give kisses, cuddles, and flurberts and her favorite spot is on my hip. Charlotte is close to walking and is eager to run around with the big kids. She'll stand at the kid table and try to lift her leg into the seat, and she has a grin as big as Texas when she gets to sit there like her brother.

Well...that's all for now folks. Hope you are all well!
Love,
The Spauldings

Mega-Dori

Tim here.
Just wanted to stop and give a shout out to Dori, whose triathlon training has been going great lately. It take a dedicated soul to get up at the crack of dawn on a weekend in order to be in the pacific ocean in a wetsuit before noon....two weeks in a row!
Here's wishing her the best of luck in the second race of the LA Triathlon series this weekend in San Dimas!
Kick butt!
Tim
